The “We Are One Rocks La Grange” event was a success. We raised some money for our upcoming programs in the community, and we raised awareness to an important issue. Thank you to everyone who helped make it possible! Also, a special thanks to musical guest “Von Chalant” who stole the show!

RealCollegeTour.com invited to judge at non-profit's singing audition

| Posted in Fun Stuff, News

On October 25th, Matt Gabrys, founder of RealCollegeTour.com, was invited to judge in a singing audition for twin rockers Rock Star & Super Star. The Star Brothers are putting the finishing touches on their debut album titled “Serenity,” which features members from KISS, Heart, the Goo Goo Dolls, and others. The purpose of the album is to raise awareness to teen substance abuse and they hope “Serenity” will be used as a tool in the battle against drug & alcohol abuse. They saved one track on the album for a high school student from the Chicago area who has the right voice and who has enthusiasm for the mission of We Are One.

Dirty little secrets of college admissions

| Posted in College Tips, News

Confirming everything that we already know here at RealCollegeTour.com, The Beast interviewed college admissions counselors from across the country and the reporter found that there are various tips and tricks to increasing your chances of getting in. Not only that, but admissions officers are very arbitrary when making decision:

While you’re anxiously mailing off those college applications this week, you might want to recalibrate your expectations based on your race, your wealth, and whether the NFL team in the city where that college is located is on a losing streak. The shadowy world of college admissions has left millions of confused and frustrated rejects in its wake.

Not only are admissions people arbitrary in their decision processes, they also can be major douchebags:

One night, I got food poisoning at a restaurant in Buffalo. The next day, I rejected all the Buffalo applications.

This article is a great read, and you should read the entire thing. All of our college reviews have a special section devoted solely to Admissions at that particular school. We’ll give you tips from students that got in, and trust us, they know things you DON’T. There are all sorts of tips and tricks on admissions that we estimate our guides will increase your chances of getting in by about 50%.

Hoosiers love to tweet

| Posted in Fun Stuff, News

Social networks have been consuming high school and college students for a few new years now. Well, now colleges are starting official facebook pages and school-sanctioned twitter accounts. WBBM 780 Chicago reports:

IU ranks sixth for its number of university-affiliated Twitter accounts, fourth for number of Twitter followers and eighth for total “tweets” per day.

IU had 16 Twitter accounts, compared with seven at Purdue University.

We think that the tweets from Indiana University look something like this:

@iustudents sorry every1!!! we’re raising tuition by 7.3% :’( #screwingcollegestudents

@professors just got paid! Faculty Foam Party at the Four Seasons Friday

@purduebmakers IU professors party harder than urs! http://i10.tinypic.com/33yrhnp.jpg

How to get thousands of dollars off your college education

| Posted in For Parents, News

Answer: Travel back in time.

Sorry, that was cruel. I hope I didn’t get anyone’s hopes up. Yes, we’re in the middle of an economic crisis and unemployment is almost at %10. So, in order to give high school students an incentive to work at McDonald’s or White Castle, colleges are increasing their tuition rates. Yahoo! reports:

“Average tuition at four-year public colleges rose 6.5 percent, or $429, to $7,020 this fall, according to the College Board’s annual “Trends in College Pricing” report, released Tuesday. At private colleges, the average list price for a year of coursework rose 4.4 percent to $26,273.”

A 4.4-6.5 percent increase is not so bad, though, is it? If they raise the tuition now, they won’t raise it again for a while, right? Wrong! How about next year’s proposed 30-F*!@ing percent tuition increase at California schools:

“Worst hit is California, whose giant public university and community college systems educate about one in six American college students. Facing unprecedented state funding cuts, public colleges have boosted fees, raised class sizes, furloughed faculty and turned away students. On top of the current year’s 9-percent fee increase, the University of California system is considering increases of more than 30 percent by next year.”

Stay classy, America.

Many college grads wind up back home :(

| Posted in News

Nearly 1 in 10 people in America are out of work. That’s bad news for college grads and for college students. The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that more and more recent grads are having trouble finding jobs, regardless of their degrees and what schools they attended.

“Despite the hidden benefits of being back home, graduates say there’s no denying that the blow they’ve been dealt by the recession hurts deeply.

“I expected to have an excellent job in a field that I was passionate about, in a top corporate architecture firm in New York City,” said Lisa Li, 22, a graduate of the prestigious Pratt Institute in Manhattan.

Instead, she’s back in San Francisco sharing a bedroom with her 15-year-old sister and helping her parents manage their rental properties.

“I feel like a failure,” Li admitted.”
Yeah, that pretty much sucks. Here’s our advice for everyone in college right now or going there next year. Don’t party. Study hard. Study fast. Save your cash. And GTFO! Be creative with your career path. Start your own business or open a franchise. Otherwise, make sure you network with the right people. Or you can just ride out the storm by getting a Master’s or PhD while the economy is shot. By the time you’re done, there will be jobs again. Unless the world ends in 2012…
